Hope this helps a little. We bought a new 961 diesel in the fall of '58. Immediately had problems with the box air cleaner plugging when picking corn with a mounted picker, so the dealer soon added a pre-cleaner but kept the box. Air intake was now moved outside the hood (no longer thru the restrictive louvers) and approx operator head level when seated. In '67 the precleaner inlet stack become plugged with oil splash from the box cleaner and the dealer replaced the whole mess with a new Ford supplied side mounted unit/precleaner. The air inlet was slightly lower than with the previous precleaner. This had the normal oil cup readily accessible on the bottom. Looked good and worked great.
