The word "trust" has lost a lot of its value lately, hasn't it? Their "mistrust in the market place" is pure BS but eBay owns PayPal and they expect eBay sellers to absorb PayPal charges. It's roughly equivalent to credit charges on a similar sized sale.
You could restrict your sales to certified check/money order or cash at the time of pickup since these things are heavy and expensive to ship.
