I guess it's all about priorities, here's my story. When I visited Cornell in High School they boasted the worlds largest English 101 class, at over 1000 students in the class. In my mind that isn't something to be proud of. I was accepted to Cornell, RIT, and Clarkson, but I actually went to SUNY Morrisville for my AS in Engineering Science, saved $30k, and was a class ahead of the private 4 year schools. Because I worked by butt off, I was debt free after my first 2 years.
I then looked at (and was accepted to) Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, and RIT to finish my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I choose RIT becuase they have a mandatory CO-OP program that forces students into 15 months of real-world experience before they graduate. It still cost me $17k/yr for the 3 year program. I graduated with only $10k of debt, becuase I worked that entire time. In case anyone wonders, I graduated with honors from both colleges.
6 years later, I can honestly say that real world experience seems to be the only thing employeers actually want. Most of the stuff they throw at you in college is either garbage or forgotten anyway. Since graduating I have taken night classes in machining and welding. They were actually useful this time, because I had use for the knowledge.
