just did basic things. i replaces all, ALL the light bulbs in the house with 9 watt compact fluoresent light bulbs. just take a look at your kitchen lights or the light ficture over the dinner table, most of those have any where from 4 40 watts to, i have seen houses with 6 100 watt bulbs in those fixtures.
make sure the weather stripping on all the windows and doors are good. hardware stores have good replacements for that or the home centers.
unplug anything what is remote controlled or has a transformer. if you dont need it, unplug it. i unhooked my door bell. it used 1 kw energy per day. this may all seem like little stuff, but it adds up. like the old addage of paying a person 1 penny for work first day and then double it every day. it adds up fast.
i am in south carolina, 1600 sq ft house, ranch. house was set at 69 degrees all summer. highest bill, electricty - $85, natural gas(summer) - $22, (winter) - $106. have gas pack with centeral air.
chesk your attic, see how the insulation is layed out. if you have a big attic door, get a attic tent.
i have cut 40 percent form my heat and air bill since i bought the house 5 years ago.
if your on a well. the running of water will cost you electricity. i switched to a dual flush toilet.
keep the fridge full. if you dont usually keep lots of food in it, keep bottles of water in it to help with mass to maintain cold.
get everyone in the house to be in habit of shutting off lights when not in room. our bathroom light gets turned off and on alot, compact bulb is still going, doesnt wear out.
if you ahev alot of night lights, switch them to the LED night lights.
i ever found a setting on my TV, where i can set it to energy mode, cuts back power to teh TV, same performance.
