you can clean it in fuel unless you have a parts cleaner. just work it in with a brush an keep working it and rinsing it. But, you have to clean the oil off after with something like carb or brake cleaner because the oil will attract dirt and dust, and there is a lot of it in that clutch housing.BTDT. So you want to also while you have the starter out, do your best to get down in with a vacuum cleaner wand to clean dust out.
