When I was a teenager, taking a Chevy 265 and making a 283 out of it was a big deal.
Many of those older horsepower figures though, are a bit skewed. Feds forced the automakers to change the rating system around 1973.
You mention the small-block Ford in place of a four-banger. I had several that were factory made. Firt was a Ford Falcon Sprint. A 63 with a 260 V8 and a 64 with a 289. I then move on to cars designed by Carol Shelby. British Sunbeam Alpines - remade into Sunbeam Tigers and sold in the U.S. I had many (wrecked many). Wish I had one now. 1964 model has a Ford 260 V8, Ford top-loader four-speed, Jeep posi rear-end, a factory-installed traction bars. Next year had a 289. I had several with 351-M engines. I'm no a Ford fan, but those Tigers were a lot of fun.
I still miss my 65 GTO - 389 tri-power. Never had another car with the same low-end torque.
I still have my 65 Chevelle SS with a 327. It's a nice runner, but not like a big-block. It does handle a lot better though than many of the big-blocks.
