I would guess that I am one of the younger guys on this board at just under 30, but my first car was a plain jane '68 Camaro with a 210 horsepower 327, backed up by a powerglide 2-speed auto tranny. Great straight body and at the time it was painfully original (manual drum brakes to boot). It wasn't that fast at the time, but it felt a lot faster then the Dodge Aries and the Caravan that I learned to drive in!
When I turned 15, my dad said that he would go in 50/50 with me on the purchase of whatever car I wanted. I knew nothing about cars at the time, except that I wanted something different than what everyone else had. So, I kept my eye in the antiques and classics section of the local newspaper classifieds. A few months (just before the muscle car prices started to skyrocket) and $4,000 bucks later, I had the car.
After paying a few mechanics' bills, I decided that I needed to learn how to fix it myself. So, I did. Over the years, I've done a complete rebuild of the car, taking apart every nut and bolt and putting it back together. It now has a hot 355 small block, backed by a TH350 trans and a 3.73 posi rear. It has four wheel disk brakes, slightly updated suspension and a minimalist (reminiscent of vintage trans-am) interior that I stitched up myself.
I love old cars and now am learning about old tracators!
