A friend back in the day had a '70 Mach I with a 351 Cleveland and a 4-speed...not only was it quick, but if you were over 4'9" tall you didn't want to be the guy in the back seat when he started grabbin' gears...not good on the back glass either, I suppose.
That was kinda the golden age...musclecars were everywhere, and in the early '70's most of 'em were a couple of years old and were affordable to a working teenager...if you could afford the insurance. Back then, we all talked about how we'd never be able to afford a Corvette, because it cost a dollar a day to insure one! In '78 when I worked at the auto auction, I saw Silver Anniversary and Pace Car 'Vettes going through the sale for a bit above their $13,000 sticker price. Today, that'll barely buy you a Kia with a/c.
