When they smell like everything around them, it's easier to sneak up on things. You're doing well if it's only horse pee. Our dog will roll in deer poop if given the opportunity.
He will also eat the poop of other dogs or cats leave in our yard. The only explanation I can think of is that he wants to eliminate their scent from his territory. He won't eat his own poop, only that of others.
