The fast idle you describe can be caused by the failure of the idle air control valve. It is located on the intake manifold and is held on by two bolts. It is a shiny metal right angle valve with an electrical connection on the back of the unit. They cost about $45.00 at a retail parts store. If you don"t have an OBDII code reader, you can test and see if it is the valve by unbolting the unit and putting a gasget made from an old cerial box under the unit and re-install the hold down bolts. This will take the IAC valve out of the circuit. When you start the engine it should not race but idle all the way down to a stall. If this happens, you will know that the IAC valve is defective. Hope this helps. Having owned three Rangers, I am very familar with the IAC valve.
