I've given up a lot of faith in our society today, for most of the reasons outlined in this topic. I am happy just to have a job, even though it may not pay the best. I know guys my age or younger that make double what I do, and they talk about how much they don't do their work and how angry they are when their boss gets on their case about it. It's like "hey, I'd gladly trade you jobs, buddy.". I'm always up for doing odd jobs (I used to be more up to it when I was in the 16 to 20 year age range, I tend to stick with more stable employment now that I am older). Usually whomever I am working for does feed me, but I usually spend the whole day working for them (6+ hours, sometimes) and I never ask for it. And I always bring a cooler of my own drinks, though again usually whomever I am working for is kind enough to make tea for me well before I am on the verge of heat stroke.
