I used treated 2x8 pine on our car hauler. Like somebody else said, you could put some sort of plate down where the really aggressive loads bite. The original untreated stuff went away after about 4 or 5 years although I'd painted it and tried to keep patched with plywood where necessary. The idea of sawing up phone poles sounds good too, if you have a sawmill handy. Could get the stuff an honest 2 in (or whatever thick) and length would not be a problem.
