It didn't happen to me, but I saw where a UPS Semi somehow lost the back trailer of his double while going down the Freeway in the City of Spokane.
The driver and UPS got real lucky. The trailer front settled down on the landing gear and slid to a stop. It stayed more or less straight in the lane and stayed upright. It didn't hit anything and nothing ran into the back of it. I suppose there was some wear to the feet of the landing gear, but I doubt that the trailer was damaged much, if at all. It was gone when I went back through there about an hour later.
I always wondered how much trouble the driver got into, if he didn't check that the 5th wheel on the dolly was latched, or if there had been mechanical failure. I didn't see the rest of the semi.
Kind of amazing to see a semi trailer in the middle of the freeway with no tractor pulling it!
