As I understand it, the legal description of the property was updated AFTER the addition was built, and the taxes were paid as assessed all along. That's not what I have issues with.
Around here, every few months we hear of a septic tank caving in. Probably older systems, but that doesn't matter. What matters to me is, it happens at all. If it happens to my house, no doubt there'll be considerable structural damage. And since I've been in the house almost 15 years already, the seller--who built the addition--has already spent the money, so I'd have little chance to collect any damages from his stupidity from when he built the house, or from the fact he'd concealed the issue of building over the septic tank from me. I mean,a jury might award damages if it got that far,but it's doubtful I'd ever collect a nickel.
So I'm saying, learn from my experience, and don't fight the building permit process so hard. Had the process been effective, and had it included an on-site inspection, this house would never have been built with an addition over any part of the septic tank. THAT'S my point.
