I suspect we all grew up riding along. Even though there is no safe place for riders. You have to rely on what your own concious will allow. I'm not going to preach about no riders because I did it when I was little and have let my kids ride,but not much.
I'd say the best place I rode was atop a flat top fender hanging on with both hands ! although when real little I'd stand on the platform and drive while my uncle sat in the seat and keep an eye on me. The worst was in a cab tractor. No room to sit or stand very good, nothing to hold onto. Had the door open and I flew out and caught the handle on the hood and my back went up against the loader frame which may of saved me ? I don't think we were moving much at all maybe pushed into a pile of ? My foot was stuck under the clutch pedal so it could not be pushed down. My uncle was able to yank it out of gear. I think it REALLY shook him up more then me.
