Rog, It seems to me that since non detergent oil pretty much disapeared from the display racks in the early 70's, your tractor probably has been running on detergent for a long time. The first thing I do when I get a new old tractor is dump the old oil and filter (if it has one ) and fill it up with 30 wt Detergent oil, to start cleaning out those sludge lined oil passages. I have done this to all 7 of my pre 1950 tractors, never a problem. Modern detergent oil will wear away the sludge layer by layer, the same way it was deposited, and hold the lighter particles in suspension until the next change.
