I would be willing to place on bet on the belt pulley one. A John Deere R is 49 horsepower, and I would bet there is no man out there that could do what you said and burn up the clutch on the R. Either the belt would slip on the pulley or the guy is gonna have some nasty burns on his hands. I am willing to bet with the ability to slowly engage the hand clutch and the torque of that diesel engine, the guy is gonna get toasted. Now granted this may not be true of every 50 horse tractor, but on a Deere with the pulley right on the crank, you are getting every drop of the horse it makes.
