That is not the way it really happened; only the way the press reported it at the time.
JFK had a bunch of Jupiter missles built by Chrysler Corp - all installed in Turkey and pointed at Russia. So, to counter that, Russia commenceed to do the same in Cuba - except they did't use Chrysler. Guess they wanted non-union built missles.
In the end, Russia did not cower and back down. It was all done by mutual agreement and was kept quiet for a long time. After JFK's huge goof with the Bay of Pigs, they didn't want anymore bad stories in the newspapers.
I'm not trying to trash JFK, just stating some reality.
