Phil, the ballast resistor goes between the ignition s/w & the coil. After you get it running put a volt meter on the coil terminal that the wire from the resistor goes to, it should be between 6-8 volts. If it is higher you will need more resistance if it is lower you will need less resistance. Also make sure the coil you have needs a resistor, some 12 volt coils have a built in resistor. I would guess if it runs & starts good with a ballast resistor on it it needs one. If it starts hard or has a miss under load it probably has a built in resistor & doesn't need an external one.
