The smart guys say the eventual solution will be individual wind and solar on each house- hooked into the grid, with the local power plant taking up the slack. Computerization makes it possible- don't have to have a bunch of guys watching the guages and adjusting constantly, like in the old days. Many on this board seem to still be "inside the box"- if some alternative doesn't completely replace coal, natural gas, hydropower, etc., then its no good. I think the solution will be a combination of technologies. Same with the auto- combination electric and fuel powered, with capacity to be 100% electric for routine commuting, but fuel backup for long trips.
