Yes, the converter box will usually add close captioning, a program guide and in many boxes, a signal strength meter. a very helpfull feature for fine tuning the antenna.
Check the features listed on the box before you buy, they are not all the same. If you have cable or may ever add satellite TV to your off antenna system, make sure the converter box has an analog feed through / pass through feature, as the satellite system signal delivered to your TV will be an analog signal.
