You're right, I believe it was the Model "T". And your point about flooding makes sense. It's awfully hard to flood an engine with a sidedraft or updraft carburetor. I also wonder if they help with atomization of the fuel, especially in very cold weather. My 32 year old Oliver, original carb, starts the instant the key is turned, even at -25. My theory is that the fuel droplets, not atomized, simply fall back down into the carb throat; only the atomized fuel makes it into the manifold where it vaporizes quickly. Anybody agree/disagree?
