Rich - I just had the seal go out on the bucket cylinder of my Freeman loader (on my Ford 4000). I ain't the wealthiest guy around, so I told the local Hydraulics shop to just replace the rod end seals - and CALL ME WITH AN ESTIMATE. Even had it in writing. The guy calls me up two days later and says he ground the tube, polished the rod, cut the rod end loose, re-welded it, ground some welds, and a couple other things. His estimate was $230. He scoffed when I told him I could buy a NEW cylinder for less then that. I ended up paying him $25 for doing stuff I didn't tell him to do, and he even made it so I couldn't put it back together and live with the leak. He screwed up the old seals. I'm going to Surplus Center tomorrow to pick up a NEW cylinder that is actually better then the old one - for $90. They also sell seal kits, but he mucked up my old one to the point where I just need to replace it. I don't think I need to darken the local shop's doorway anytime soon.
