Sanitation and prevention, do you have a yearly vaccination program in place for the foundation herd? Do you vaccinate and give boosters to new additions to the herd, do you have dry lots, pastures or pens to keep new arrivals isolated from the rest of the herd for 2-3 weeks? Worming is also very important as parasite infested animals have weak immune systems. Disinfecting the barn and pens is important, don't forget squeeze chute, livestock trailer, feed bunks etc. Sunlight and fresh air do a good job over time but if you have animals from off your farm it pays to use lysol or clorox solution in a sprayer and lime the barn and pens after each cleaning. If you buy sale barn cattle you have to remember that most people don't do any of the above so you are taking a chance on bringing parasites/diseases on your place. Proper management should reduce or eliminate the risk.
