We need to keep the manufacturing capability, but not by putting government into the business of managing anything. All government can manage is to make a mess out of things.
Now, government getting an ownership stake--as in, stock in the company--in exchange for the money already spent--only makes sense if the company has any hope of becoming viable, and making taxpayers' investment come back with interest--as Chrysler repaid its loans in the 1980's.
Government already has enough "input" into the design of cars with the mandated crash standards and fuel mileage standards. Do we really want these idiots telling us what our cars should look like as well...or even whether we'll have a choice? Sounds like you're advocating a return to the USSR of the 1960's...and we all know where that kind of country ends up.
