I'm talking about universal health care. There is a difference. These people that you see are taken care of by private charities and are generally panhandling for booze or drug money.I have done some work in soup kitchens and you would be surprised at the mentality of some of these people there. They live that way because they choose to and some, not all, are not mentally ill. Many have drug and alchohol problems, some can not cope with everyday life and they have a place to sleep and stay warm and a place where they get three sqaure meals a day. And they like it. I can't believe it's any different in Canada!
You didn't used to see this in the US. In the late '60's and early '70's, in Washington state where I lived, some geniuses figured that there were drugs available to treat people in mental institutions with various mental diseases and they didn't need mental ospitals. So they closed them down, one by one, and tried to put these people on the streets with medication by prescription paid for by the Health & Social Services Department. Common sense would tell you that people with mental conditions can't be expected to medicate themselves properly and so we suddenly had scores of people living on the streets. But the state saved money by closing down these institutions. Yeah right!
