I put my magnet in a small plastic pail with a handle and just drag it over the ground. To remove stuff captured, I just lift out the magnet and it all drops. Have you considered an electro-magnet? Most high school or college Physics labs have one powered by a 1.5 volt "D" cell that will pick up 200 pounds.
