When I put something solid, I want to hold on to the springs and not weld anything (so I can put it back to original if necessary). Should I put rubber on each end?

I'm certainly not an engineer, but I don't think the rubber would be a good idea. Wouldn't the rubber just compress under load?
I can't tell from the picture, but does that spring have a thrust bearing on each end?
