I have a Remington 700 in .270 and it's awesome against whitetails.
I went to a gun show this morning. It was a small one, even by rural Nebraska standards. I did buy a NIB Hi-Point .45 auto. Haven't fired it yet. Didn't want to disturb the Alpha Female. She doesn't know I have a firearms fund ratholed.
And, I know. Hi-Points are cheap. But, dang it, I have one in 9mm and outside of one quirk it's really not all that bad. (Besides the inherent ineffectiveness of a 9mm). The one quirk is, if you shoot Winchester ammo, it will jam on the last round, every time. If you shoot Remington ammo, it's flawless and at least as accurate as I am, and I routinely qualified high Sharpshooter with the .45 pistol in the Marine Corps.
And there were bargains to be had, although not among Colts, Rugers, et al. Mostly in the lesser known makes. There was a Wards (made by Mossberg) 20 guage, vent rib, pump shotgun in pristine condition for $200 that caught my eye. I might have bought it if I hadn't run into the .45. On the other hand, good old M-1 rifles were still going for $1200 minimum.
