One must remember that Chevrolet had a V8 engine WAY back in about 1917 or 1919. Short lived. Yea, I know this is not the small block you are talking about and Chevrolet was not really a part of "GM" at the time. Also, (while I'm on my soap box) when Chevrolet came out with their small block V8 in 1955, they had trouble getting the old cast iron piston rings to seat properly. Do you know the official factory fix for this? Drum roll please....... Bon-Ami. Yep, the kitchen/bathroom cleaner was poured down the carburetor and it scuffed up the cylinder walls enough to get the piston rings to seat. Chevy had enough of a problem with this in '55 and '56 that by '57 the engine had a little bit of a reputation as an oil burner. So much so that in 1957, Ford actually outsold Chevrolet. The '55 and '56 small blocks from Chevys are actually worth some money to the people who really want one because.....they don't have a cannister or spin-on oil filter mount. Okay, I'm off my soap box now. Y'all can wake up now.
