Hey Daniel, stump-pullin' can be a lot of fun! Here's a tip I picked up on this site from Wolf: dig down far enough to pass the chain under a couple of the main roots, wrap around the central root, etc, then run the chain over a section of log or phone pole shoved up against the trunk. As the chain comes tight, the log section acts as an elevator, converting the horizontal pull from the tractor into a vertical tug straight up. I figure trees develop their root system to withstand lateral wind forces, but not an anti-gravity pull upwards,l so this is quite effective. Above all, be safe! I just idle along in 1st gear till the slack is taken up, then open the throttle a bit, holding my foot over the clutch to stop the action if the wheels spin or the front end starts up. Enjoy! Tex
