If you've only got one or two to do, then following the advice given here is a good start. Also, you might get a shovel and axe and cut the roots on the side opposite from where you're pulling if the stump is at all fresh. Dig and cut, pull, dig and cut, pull...That gets to be work, but it'll help.

If you've got a lot of stumps, trees whatever then getting a medium dozer or possibly a stump grinder to take care of them would be a lot better and quicker idea.
