If a gear change gets you closer to a slushbox, you best head the other way as fast as your 3.55's will haul you. I can't for the life of me figure out why low range wouldn't work for the spots where you need a granny gear to get moving, and then use direct or lower gears wher needed when pulling rather than overdrive. I've got a Ranger with 4.10's. It loves gas. Actually, more than yours.... A lot more than yours. If you want any type of mileage you want the tach under 2K at highway speed. For my part I'd sooner gear down for the 20-30 percent of the time I'm hauling something rather than feed gas to the devil like I do now with 4.10's. I actually went with larger tires about a year ago that brought the effective ratio to something like 3.77 or so and it brought somewhere between 5-10% improvement in mileage. I think you'll find a very linear relationship between gear ratio and fuel efficiency... with the more reduction burning more gas.
