I posted about this here back when that study came out. Here is what bothers me about it:
The study is based on satellite photos.
Now, there are a few things that all satellite photos have in common:
1. They are taken when the sun is at its highest point in the sky.
2. They are taken when there are no clouds in the sky.
As long as you're not very close to the Equator, you are going to face North (or South if you're in the Southern Hemisphere) under these conditions because that's the direction that best keeps the sun out of your eyes.
Not saying that the magnetism hypothesis is false, but I wouldn't put too much stock into it unless they do another study that controls for sunlight.
