The hydraulic pump is driven by the same gear train that runs your camshaft and distributor. If it is under load, any play in the system will be tightened up temporarily. Since using the hydraulics dampens the noise, that gear train is suspect. What is the oil pressure on this tractor? Low oil pressure on these engines can sometimes be traced to worn camshaft bearings. Higher rpms would typically produce more pressure, and you indicate the noise lessens as rpms increase. Try to find a way to turn the engine slowly and listen for the noise. I think that tractor has a place for a crank to be used, but the mechanism is likely frozen in place unless it's been used lately. You might try jacking up one rear wheel, putting it in 5th gear, and rotating the engine by turning the wheel forward. That would let you listen in relative quiet for what is banging in there. (It will be even easier to turn if you pull the sparkplugs) Getting to those gears in the front end won't be fun, if that's where the trouble turns out to be.

Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul
