Had a IH 450 with the exact symtoms, a rap in the front gear train that went away when you reved it up or used the live hyd pump.When we tore it down we found that the hub had cracked loose in the cam gear and the gear was flopping around in there untill you added extra load with the hyd pump. If this is your problem inspect the other gears closly, it chipped the teeth on the hyd pump The IH partsman told me this is a common problem.( cam gear breaking) You can check this by removing the pump/ distributor and see if the cam gear has any front to rear slop.
