If the engine starts and runs or at least fires, I spray a bunch of carb spray in the tank with little or no gas. If it runs, I may also pour some fuel injection cleaner in with the gas.
If it doesn't run, drain the gas and spray part or all of a can of carb cleaner in the tank. Crank on it for a while and the carb cleaner will get down to the carb. May want to drain the lines and carb bowl first and spray into the lines and carb directly. Let it set for a while to clean the varnish out of the tank bottom, lines, and carb.
I'm rebuilding a 2 stroke trimmer engine and use carb cleaner. Someone on a forum said to use starting fluid and not carb cleaner since the cleaner eats up the gas lines, primer bulb, and the diaphram rubber. Don't know for sure on that but I use carb cleaner all the time on small engines. On those 2 stroke and old engine carbs with diaphrams, the diaphrams tend to dry out and get gunked up anyway and need replacing every so often.
On the other hand, I usually forget to put stabil in the mowers and they still fire up first time in the spring. If you have a varnish problem, change the filter also.
