JD40C Tappet Lubircation

There is no oil getting to the tappets in the engine of my crawler. I have taken the external oil line off and there is no oil coming from the crankcase. Before I start taking things apart does anyone have any suggestions? I have the IT shop manual but it does show enough detail to see how it is supposed to work. Also, the passages seem to be clear. Thanks for any help.
