I think that you will do just fine. In addition to other cautions, be careful working in a wood building not to set it on fire. I "learned" to weld when I was over 40 years old without lessons, just some advice and reading books. My welds never looked pretty, but they never basically failed. When in doubt I used some kind of reinforcement (gusset, etc.). By the way, with a stick welder, you will be able to also cut metal just fine--not a real pretty cut, but it works. I build a number of pipe cattle gates years ago and they are still in use.
