Sure, you can use the old ammeter, I actually prefer them over a voltmeter, as noted below you have to swap leads if you change battery polarity or she will resd bass ackwards. Assuming its a coil ignition, its leads should also be swapped if you change polarity, that would mean its lil + receives ignition switch voltage while its lil - wires to the distributor for negative ground. You can EITHER add a voltage dropping (12 to 6) external series Ballast Resistor ahead of an old 6 volt coil or else get a new full true 12 volt coil no ballast required.
