the note about the springs is interesting, and weak springs can cause the valves to leak.but when the head is tested by itself they dont show up.usually the valves are checked using vacuum.it seems to me you have done a type of leakdown test.I would be suspect of the black mark on the head and block,but for a complete loss of compression the head gasket should definitely show the problem.at this point ,i agree that you might put the head back on,using the old gasket,leave the air and exhuast manifolds off and crank the motor over and see if the valves leak on the compression strokes
