I have a 4500 backhoe that we recently separated the tractor to fix the shifting fork inside the bell housing. Maybe it is the same problem for you as I hear this is common. Does it shift into neutral and forward OK? Can you grab onto the shaft into the top of the bell housing and manually shift the tractor into the three positions? If so, then it is a simpler linkage fix.
