Metallic Paint - a few questions ???

Saw a Farmall at a tractor show last summer that was painted metallic red (if you can believe it), and although it would've been better with a more original look, it was actually quite nice. Which brings me to a few questions about metallic paint.
1. When did metallic paint come on the market (I assume in the automotive industry)?
2. Exactly what is metallic paint (what's in it)?
3. Were any tractors every painted with the stuff from the factory?
