They taste like that because there's no fat on them. There's no fat on them because they're killed at 7 weeks instead of the 8,9, 10, 12, 15 that you would keep them if you raised your own. That's the size the packers want... because that's what their markets want... so that's what they get. If I'm not mistaken, the feed is still medicated for coccidia... and if you buy bagged feed at the feed store for yor back yard operation, often times you find that it's also medicated for coccidia. If it's not, you find poor doers... or dead chickens.
