Robert, I agree with most of your response but all 6 volt systems do not have 6 volts to the points. Check out a circuit on a Ford red belly. Since the posts asked about a Farmall, the comments regarding a GM and a JD do not apply. What I was having the man to verify is whether the tractor in question has a resistor or not. If it has a resistor it has been converted to 12 volts. With no resistor and a 12 volt battery installed he would have 12 volts to the points and this would indicate a 6 volt system. Also, I had him to check it in the run position, this would keep the 12 volt start voltage from the points if the tractor was wired to crank on 12 and run on 6. I am attaching a link that has a download of a small program that helps me with my posts tremendously. Using the program will help when spell check is not available or when there is uncertainty with a word.
