IMHO... Don't put the 8-volt battery in. You will fry your coil and your points quickly. When you do a 12-volt conversion, you are just trading one set of problems for another. What you need to do is fix the problems that you have with the 6-volt system. It may be that your battery is just old and weak. How big (thick) are your battery cables? They have to be at least 2 guage (mine are 1/0) to allow the needed amperage to flow. Buy or make yourself the shortest, fattest cables that will fit between the post and the connection! 6 guage Japanese car cables just won't cut it. Clean ALL your connections! They must be shiney, bright and tight in order to eliminate any resistance caused by corrosion. Do you have 'resistor' wires on your spark plugs? Junk them and get yourself some copper-core wires. They still make them and they are marketed to 'Hot-Rod' enthusiasts for 'High-Performance' vehicles. If you don't believe me, go to the N Board archives and read up on the troubles you will be getting into with an 8 volt battery...
