Why consider vinyl or steel at all? We recently put on a major additon and used "cement" board. It looks like real wood..but is virtually maintenance free. I'm here in Minnesota also and it was my only choice for siding. There are lots of brands but James Hardie is the best known. I think it's generally competitive with other types of quality siding.
