JLG, just saw your post after I responded to Oliver's. I'd be interested in your sources for good quality vinyl siding as I mentioned above. Vinyl is popular around here. I can tell the cheap jobs and cheap non backed siding by all the waves in it. Up around Kansas City, they have Continental siding and supply with seamless vinyl with glued insulation board like on garage doors with a mounting bracket that is screwed in. I checked with them but they just want to come out and bid a turnkey job. Since I want to take the old stuff off, maybe change some insulation, add some house wrap, add some exterior lights and outlets, and then do things like remove the electric service from the wall, they will want to charge a fortune. I've always thought it was tacky where siding installers side around conduit and elec meters.
My siding isn't real bad and the house is only 20 years old. But I've never been a fan of hiding defective and old siding. Whenever I do it, I'll just tear off the old stuff to have a nice looking job.
