Only ones I was ever around were working/house dogs on a cattle ranch in New Mexico.
John described their nature pretty well.
Where the heeling shepherd and collie type dogs are good at keeping a herd or bunch together, the "Cats" tend to work the head end of the cow and earn their keep in finding, rounding up and holding cattle, especially stubborn ones.
