6V Battery Cables - DO OLD ONES DELIVER DECENT CURRENT?

I've read all the stuff that guys have posted about using the big (#1) cables for 6V starting (instead of the thinner gauge 12V stuff). And I have also read the explanations why the big cables work better, but I'm wondering, does an OLD cable (large size) lose any of it's potential as a current carrying cable, even if the terminals are in good shape? Some big cables I've got are in remarkably good shape but they're old. Would new ones give me more juice? Just wondering. By the way, it's going down to minus 30 degrees here tonight so you fellas down south should count your blessings.
